CHAPTER 6

“You hate him. You hate him for leaving you, don’t you, Knox?”

“No,” he said.

“He promised to protect you, yet he left you there. He doesn’t

care about you. He doesn’t love you. I am the only one who does.” Rallus. Baby. Why did you leave me? You said you’d be there, said he’d never get to me.

::He lied.::

::Yes, he lied.::

::You hate him.::

Knox looked up at Atlas with tear filled eyes. He felt confused, his mind a fog.

“You hate him, don’t you, Knox?” Atlas demanded, tipping up his chin and looking deep into his eyes. “Say it.”

“I hate him. I hate Rallus.”

::He must be punished. Do you want to watch me punish him?::

Knox nodded. He crawled on his hands and knees and wound his arms around his legs. “Please, Daddy. I’ll be good. Let me watch. Let me watch you punish Rallus.”

Atlas stroked his hair. “If you do all I tell you to do, then you shall have your reward.” He pulled away from him. “It’s time to leave the hotel now. Another few hours and we’ll be home, my pet. You’ll be safe in your cage where he can never lie to you again.”

* * * “There are too many police cars around,” Rallus remarked to Fisk. “She won’t stop.”

“They’re unmarked.”

“I told you she has special powers. She can sense things, put

things in people’s heads.”

“He doesn’t believe you, Rallus,” Adrian interjected. “He’s a

quantitative jerk-off who doesn’t believe anything unless it’s in

front of his nose.”

“You…” Fisk made a move in Adrian’s direction.

Rallus placed a hand on his chest and shook his head. “It’s not

worth it.” He started walking away. “Use Penny if you want but

I’m going after her.”

Adrian trotted along behind him.

“Where are you going?”

“With you. You need me.”

“I beg to differ. Look, I’ll read the files okay? I imagine there’s

enough in there to throw suspicion on the residence for killing off

people who have left huge sums of money to the home.” “You’re so smart.”

“Don’t insult me.”

“If you hadn’t have been so obsessed with Knox’s ass, you

would have figured it out a long time ago.”

“I wasn’t on the case, remember? I’m retired.”

“Yeah, right. You’re as retired as I am alive.”

Rallus got in the vehicle. Adrian got in beside him. “Are you really going to chase her?”

“Yes. She’s a thief and an evil bitch. She’s dangerous, and she

can lead me to her brother.”

“I know where he is. I told you. I just have to follow Knox.

We’re connected. He’s not in Fawnskin.”

“You told me that already.” He waited, watching the road. “She

has to come from that way.”

Adrian leaned back in the passenger seat. “That was the best

sex I’ve ever had, by the way.”

“Don’t mention it,” Rallus muttered.

“You don’t understand. I owe you. I pretended you were him.

Do you mind?”

“Whatever turns your clock.”

“I was good-looking when I was young.”

Rallus glanced at him and started the engine in anticipation. “If I’d been born later, I would have—”

“Probably done the same thing.”

He laughed. “Yeah, probably. I hate when you’re right.” “There she is,” he said and slammed his foot down on the gas.
